Evaluating Transceiver Behavior under 99.8% Bus Saturation and Malicious Frame Flooding

By Dr. Jean-Pierre Monet, Chief Hardware Validation Specialist • September 2026

Abstract: Experimental analysis of transceiver thermal dissipation and microcontroller buffer overflows under extreme non-stop bus traffic.

1. High-Density Traffic Generation During vehicle flashing or catastrophic sensor malfunctions, bus load can exceed 95%. This paper documents stress testing performed using FPGA-based frame generators streaming continuous 0-byte dominant frames onto a multi-drop CAN-FD network.

2. Thermal and Error-State Evaluation Transceiver silicon junction temperatures were monitored under sustained short-circuit and heavy differential drive. Modern transceivers equipped with thermal shutdown protected the hardware, while microcontroller driver software correctly reported CAN_ERR_BUSOFF to the AUTOSAR Diagnostic Log and Trace (DLT) module.
