Automotive CAN Conformance Certification: Implementing the ISO 16845 Test Suite

By Maximilian Weber, Lead Conformance Engineer • May 2026

Abstract: A complete walk-through of the standardized ISO 16845 conformance test harness for automotive controllers and IP cores.

1. Standardized Conformance Architecture Before an ECU can be approved for integration into an OEM platform, it must pass the ISO 16845 test suite, which verifies that the controller's state machine strictly adheres to the Bosch CAN specification.

2. Edge-Case Protocol Validation The test suite injects precise bit-level glitches into CRC delimiters, ACK slots, and stuff bits. Controllers that fail to assert an active error flag within the exact bit time are flagged as non-conformant, ensuring that rogue controllers can never destabilize vehicle communication networks.
